Afternoon Tea Party at MFH!

19/Jan/2012  Legend has it that Afternoon Tea was started in the mid-1800s by the Duchess of Bedford in England. Around this time there were only two meals each day - a mid-morning breakfast and the other was a rather late dinner.

The story goes that the Duchess always found herself tired and hungry around 3pm and decided to have some friends over for assorted snacks and tea! Excellent solution! The idea of an afternoon tea gathering became popular among high society and became a favourite hobby of ladies of leisure. Gradually the fashion caught on, until even now in Wellington, NZ, at MFH Institute, it’s hard to imagine life without it!

So, our students got creative and researched, baked, and shared many different “finger foods” from around the globe! From Swiss chocolate mousse, kiwi corn fritters, yummy sushi, and British "jammy dodgers" to Brazilian brigadeiros, carefully crafted Indian Dhokla, mind-blowing candies from Germany, healthy hummus, delicious Korean Sae woo kang, even dates from Ali's family farm in Saudi Arabia, it was truly an afternoon tea for the history books! One dish was even invented - a French-Chinese fusion of puff-pastry with peanuts! A short quiz followed to see who had learnt the most about the world's cuisines. The prize for the best-looking dish was awarded to Hamid and Marzieh from Iran for their beautiful "Ghorme Sabzi", and Abdul earned the best-tasting prize for his mouth-watering “Chocolate Cheesecake”. Thank you to all who attended and contributed to our Afternoon Tea Party!

We're always excited to have fun learning experiences so watch out for the next MFH International Feast!

MFH Student Christmas Party

13/DEC/2011  This week at MFH we wrap up the end of this eventful 2011, with a much-looked-forward to party with all our current students and also welcoming back our graduates from the year. The afternoon entertainment included breathtaking performances from students (and staff!), games, and festive pizza lunch with international sweet treats for dessert. Yum!

Highlights of the party were “Feliz Navidad” by the talented MFH staff choir, Sanam’s traditional Indian dance, a romantic duet in Hindi, “All I Want For Christmas is My IELTS 6.0 reprised by our musical IELTS class, an incredibly lively bhangra by our diploma students, AND surprise appearance by Santa Claus! Of course the quintessential Kiwi party games were not to be missed: pass the parcel, double dare, and the popular “Where is Chris?” game! Prizes were won, laughs were had, and of course the MFH flag was unveiled!

We have so many fun memories from this year, and appreciate all our students coming to Wellington to study here in 2011. We wish all MFH students, friends and family a marvellous Christmas and New Year, and look forward to seeing you in 2012!

Chinese Embassy officials visit

22/Nov/2011, we had a great pleasure and welcomed the Education Counsellor Mr Sheng Gang Wang and the First Secretary Mr Zheng Shun Qiao of the Education Section of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in New Zealand. Mr Wang and Qiao visited the new premises, met with our management team and talked with our Chinese students.

The Chinese students greeted their arrival with the most enthusiastic applause. It was exciting for our students to have such opportunity to meet with the Education Officials in New Zealand. Mr Wang asked students about how they live and study in New Zealand. He asked students to be diligent to study as well as to take care of their safety and well being. Students were motivated and had a family-like feeling.

The Chinese Embassy Education Section provides service to all Chinese students. It is a home away from home. Students can find more information on the website here.

01/Nov/2011  Immigration New Zealand Information Session

We invited Immigration New Zealand to visit our school and provide information about New Zealand’s immigration policies,  rules, and regulations, with a special emphasis on recent policy changes.  Our students and staff also had the opportunity to speak directly to Celia Coombes, the Business Relationship Advisor and John Lyde, the Compliance Officer, with many good questions keeping them very busy!

The most useful information we received was that the New Zealand government wants our students to be successful and make a positive contribution to our country.

To be successful, Immigration New Zealand stated that:
  • students must attend classes at all times
  • students must complete all assigned work and maintain good academic performance
  • schools must provide good support to students
MFH is proud  to say that we have an open and positive working relationship with Immigration New Zealand and we are committed to providing all the support necessary for students to be successful and make a positive contribution to New Zealand. Many thanks to John and Celia, we enjoyed your visit and we  look forward to seeing you more in the future!

26/Oct/2011  Indian Diwali celebration

Today was a very important occasion at MFH: Diwali! With the wonderful help of our students, we learned a lot about the origins of this colourful festival of lights, and how to celebrate! Traditionally, candles, lights and fireworks play an important role, beautifully bright colours are worn in honour of this occasion, and of course deliciously sweet mithai  are shared with family and friends! We were lucky to taste a few of these, not least gulab jamuns, motichoor laddu, kaju katli, and sweet chai. One student mentioned that among many other reasons, Diwali represents the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance. What a lovely reason to celebrate! Best Diwali wishes to you all, and wishing you a future full of light and prosperity!

17/10/2011  Steven Jobs video session

27/09/2011  Celebration of the 81st anniversary of Saudi Arabia
This week at MFH we celebrated the 81st anniversary of Saudi Arabia, according to the Hijra Calendar.

It was a student-organised affair and both the Saudi community (wearing the customary thawb and ghutra an iqal) and international community were well represented! Students from Brazil, India, Korea, Peru, Iran, China and Mexico were among the many countries welcomed to the event by the traditional scented oud (incense).

The students and staff were then treated to a dazzling array of photos, exotic music, spot prizes, competitive Q&A session, regional dances and foods represented by delicious coffee and baklava. Invigorated by this sweet treat, students and staff were welcomed into the dance circle to sing and celebrate together the spirit of the Saudi nation.

It was an incredible atmosphere, entirely run by our brilliant students, enjoyed by all!

02/09/2011  September’s MFH on a plate !
Crèpes au nutella, gulab jamuns, Arabian coffee, baba ghanoush, spring rolls and much more! On the 2nd of September we held our International Food Day, to the delight of everyone in attendance. Students, teachers, and members of the MFH team all prepared a dish and wore something that represented their home country. We learned traditional dances and we were honoured to watch a Maori poi dancer perform !  Exotic music, dancing, and sweet or savoury treats from around the globe. What better way to celebrate our diverse backgrounds!

The question remains, which country will win « best food » at our upcoming International Picnic ?
